ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETENCY AND ATTAINMENT OF ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL OF SMALL MEDIUM ENTERPRISESES (SMES) IN SELECTED LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BAYELSA STATE
Abstract
This study examined the effect of entrepreneurship competency on the attainment of organizational goals among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The study was driven by the increasing failure rate of SMEs despite their vital role in employment generation and economic development. the objective includes to examine the influence opportunity recognition competency on profitability, influence of organizing competency on market. A survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from SME owners/managers using a structured questionnaire. Entrepreneurship competency was conceptualized in terms of opportunity recognition competency and organizing competency, while organizational goal attainment was measured using financial performance (profitability) market performance (market share). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential techniques such as correlation. The findings revealed that entrepreneurship competency has a significant positive effect on the attainment of organizational goals among SMEs. Specifically. opportunity recognition competencies and organizing competencies emerged as the strongest predictors of goal attainment. The study concludes that entrepreneurship competency is a critical driver of SME success and sustainability. It therefore recommends continuous entrepreneurial training, capacity development, and policy support aimed at strengthening entrepreneurial competencies among SME operators
