JOB DESIGN APPROACHES AND OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY: A RE-ENGINEERING APPROACH OF BAKERY FIRMS IN PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE
Abstract
This study examined the relationship between job design approaches, specifically job enrichment (autonomy), job specification skill variety) and operational efficiency of bakery firms in Port Harcourt. A survey research design was adopted, targeting 57 registered bakery firms with a total population of 171 employees. Using purposive sampling, three key staff members from each firm were selected, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire designed on a four-point Likert scale. Instrument validity was ensured through expert review, while reliability achieved a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.70. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient. Findings revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between job enrichment and operational efficiency (ρ = 0.341, p < 0.01), indicating that greater employee autonomy contributes to improved performance, quicker responsiveness, and smoother production processes. Similarly, job specification showed a stronger positive and significant relationship with operational efficiency (ρ = 0.440, p < 0.01), suggesting that matching tasks to employee skill sets enhances accuracy, reduces delays, and improves overall productivity. These results underscore the importance of well-structured job design in promoting effective workflow and operational outcomes within bakery firms. The study concludes that implementing appropriate job enrichment and job specification practices enhances operational efficiency, and it recommends that bakery firms should adopt structured job design frameworks, invest in skill-based task allocation, and continuously review job roles to optimize performance.
