Evaluation of NADDC Training Programme in the Formal Sector of Automobile Mechanics Centres in Northern Nigeria
Abstract
This study evaluated the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) training programme in formal sector automobile mechanics centres in Northern Nigeria with emphasis on the appropriateness of programme objectives and material resources for the maintenance and repair of modern vehicles. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design guided by the Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) evaluation model. The study was conducted in Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The population comprised 700 respondents, consisting of 632 NADDC graduates, 56 trainers, and 12 assessors. A sample size of 313 respondents was selected using census sampling for trainers and assessors, while Taro Yamane’s formula was used to determine the sample size for graduates. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled “NADDC Training Program Evaluation Questionnaire (NTPEQ)” containing 106 items measured on a five-point rating scale. The instrument was validated by experts in Technology Education and Measurement and Evaluation, while a pilot study conducted at the NADDC training centre in Adamawa State produced a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.956. Data were analysed using Mean and Standard Deviation to answer the research questions, while t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the objectives of NADDC training programmes were appropriate and aligned with industry needs, while material resources such as diagnostic tools and training equipment were adequately provided for effective implementation. The study concluded that NADDC training programmes effectively equip trainees with relevant technical skills for modern vehicle maintenance and repairs. It was recommended that NADDC should continuously review its training objectives and strengthen collaboration with automobile industries to improve training facilities and programme effectiveness..
