Active listening is the core of effective counselling, serving as a powerful tool for healing and growth. This article explores the complex nature of listening in therapeutic counselling practice, examining its historical roots, theoretical foundations, and practical applications. The paper x- rayed the neurobiological basis of empathic listening, highlighting how it impacts both client and counsellor. We identified key barriers to effective listening, including cognitive biases, emotional reactivity, and environmental factors, and proposes strategies to overcome these challenges. We analyze the components of active listening, encompassing non-verbal, verbal, and cognitive elements, and discuss their role in fostering a strong therapeutic alliance. By integrating current research, case studies, and practical exercises, this article aims to deepen counsellors' understanding of listening as an evolving art form that lies at the centre of empowering communication in counselling. The aim is to inspire practitioners to continually refine their listening skills, enhancing their ability to create transformative therapeutic experiences for their clients.
