ASSESSMENT OF COTTAGE TEXTILE PRODUCERS’ SOCIO-ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES IN SOUTH WESTERN NIGERIA
Abstract
This paper assesses the socio-economic activities of cottage textile producers in South Western. A mixed methods approach was employed, combing surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and observation. The paper reveals that cottage textile producers play a vital role in the region’s economy, providing employment and income opportunities for numerous individuals. However, producers face challenges such as limited access to finance, in-adequate infrastructures and competition from cheap imported textiles. This paper identifies opportunities for growth, including increasing demand for traditional textiles, potential for export markets and collaboration with other textile producers. Recommendations are made to support the growth and development of the sector, including provision of finance, improvement of infrastructure, promotion of market access and fostering collaboration.
