Abstract

The study examined the administrative responsibilities and teachers’ job productivity in Delta State public secondary schools. In carrying out the study, three research questions were answered and one hypothesis was tested. The study is a correlational and descriptive method of the ex-post-facto research design. The study covered all public secondary school principals and teachers in Delta State. The population for this study is made up of 479 principals and 14,877 teachers in Delta State. The sample consists of 541 principals and teachers in public secondary schools in Delta State. The sampling technique employed for the study is multi-stage sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires. Data gathered from the field were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics like Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient (r) and coefficient of determination was used to provide answers to the research questions while linear and multiple regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings from the study showed that the primary administrative responsibilities typically undertaken by principals in public secondary schools in Delta State include; management risk, effective communication, active listening, motivation, priority management, problem solving, delegation of duties, decision making, planning and dedication. The level of teacher job productivity in public secondary schools in Delta State is high. Also, there is a significant relationship between administrative responsibilities and teachers’ job productivity. It was concluded that the level of teachers’ job productivity in public secondary schools in Delta State is high. Also, there is a significant relationship between administrative responsibilities and teachers’ job productivity. It was recommended among others that to effectively manage the diverse responsibilities of principals, schools should organize a comprehensive leadership program to equip principals with necessary skills to excel in their roles
