RECLAIMING HERITAGE: THE REVIVAL OF INDIGENOUS TEXTILES AND CRAFTSMANSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY FASHION
Abstract
The global fashion industry has increasingly embraced indigenous textiles and craftsmanship as a part of a larger movement toward sustainability, cultural preservation, and ethical production. This study examines the resurgence of traditional textile techniques in contemporary fashion, analyzing the factors contributing to this revival, including economic empowerment, technological integration, and the role of designers in promoting heritage crafts. Using qualitative methods, including case studies and interviews with designers and artisans, the research highlights the sociocultural and economic implications of integrating indigenous textiles into mainstream fashion. The findings suggest that while the revival of heritage textiles fosters cultural sustainability, challenges such as cultural appropriation and economic exploitation must be addressed through fair trade policies and responsible design practices. The study concludes with recommendations for strengthening the partnership between indigenous artisans and fashion designers to ensure ethical and sustainable engagement with traditional craftsmanship
