Abstract

This study examines the impact of prison agricultural programs on food security and food availability in Nigeria. It explores the relationship between these programs and both food security and availability through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Using ex-post- facto survey methodology, data were collected from 202 respondents via online questionnaires distributed through Google Forms and administered through WhatsApp and email. The results reveal a significant positive relationship between prison agricultural programs and both food security and availability in Nigeria. Descriptive analysis shows a moderately strong relationship between prison agricultural programs and food security, with a correlation coefficient of 65%, and a moderately weak relationship between these programs and food availability, with a correlation coefficient of 50%. Hypothesis testing confirms the significance of these relationships, leading to the rejection of null hypotheses. Discussion of findings highlights the potential benefits of prison agricultural programs in boosting local food production, enhancing food security, and contributing to rehabilitation efforts. However, challenges such as infrastructure limitations and policy gaps must be addressed to ensure the long-term viability and success of these programs. Recommendations include developing comprehensive guidelines, strengthening governance structures, and investing in infrastructure to optimize the benefits of prison agricultural programs in Nigeria.
