THE USE OF PIDGIN IN NIGERIAN LITERATURE: A LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL STUDY
Abstract
This study explores the use of Nigerian Pidgin in Nigerian literature from a linguistic and cultural perspective, focusing on its representation in literary texts. Nigerian Pidgin, as an evolving and dynamic language, has gained recognition as a significant medium of expression in both oral and written forms. The research aims to analyze the linguistic features of Nigerian Pidgin, particularly its syntax, phonology, and lexicon, and to examine how these features reflect the cultural and social realities of Nigerian society, especially in terms of class, ethnicity, and identity. The study employs a quantitative research design, utilizing a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 343 lecturers of English and Linguistics in tertiary institutions in Delta State, Nigeria. The study area was chosen due to the linguistic diversity and the prevalence of Nigerian Pidgin in daily communication and literature within the region. Data collected from respondents were analyzed to determine their perspectives on the use of Nigerian Pidgin in literary works, its socio-cultural implications, and its role in literary expression. The findings indicate that Nigerian Pidgin serves as an important tool for reflecting the complexities of Nigerian society, particularly the marginalized classes. It plays a key role in expressing the cultural identity of its speakers and in challenging linguistic hierarchies. The linguistic features of Nigerian Pidgin, such as its flexible syntax and rich lexicon, contribute to its effectiveness in conveying social realities and cultural nuances. The study also highlights the growing acceptance of Nigerian Pidgin in contemporary Nigerian literature and the need for its inclusion in academic research, literary studies, and educational curricula. Based on the findings, the study recommends promoting the use of Nigerian Pidgin in literary works, encouraging more research on its linguistic features, and advocating for policy reforms to recognize Nigerian Pidgin as an important language in Nigeria’s educational, literary, and cultural contexts. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the need to overcome the stigma associated with Nigerian Pidgin and to foster greater linguistic and cultural pride in its use.
