This study examined the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in conflict prevention and peacebuilding in Nigeria, focusing on its application in early warning systems, effectiveness in post-conflict stabilisation, and institutional, ethical, and operational challenges. A mixed-method research design was employed, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The population consisted of 1,200 respondents drawn from security agencies, government ministries, civil society organisations, and academic institutions across six states representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. A sample of 291 respondents was selected using multi-stage sampling, with 274 questionnaires returned (94.16% response rate) and 36 key informants interviewed. Data collection utilised the “Artificial Intelligence and Peacebuilding Questionnaire (AIPQ)” and semi-structured interview guides, administered in English, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and Pidgin. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Findings indicate moderate AI application in conflict early warning, partial effectiveness in peacebuilding, and significant barriers due to technical, ethical, and institutional challenges. The study recommends enhanced institutional integration, capacity-building, and regulatory frameworks to improve AI adoption. These results provide critical insights for policymakers, security agencies, and peacebuilding actors seeking to leverage technology for sustainable conflict prevention in Nigeria.
