Abstract

Education is a critical factor in achieving sustainable development, as it is directly linked to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 and also indirectly impacts SDGs related to health, alleviating poverty and economic growth.
Large educational datasets are analyzed resulting in opportunities for teaching improvement, policy decisions and learning strategies. The effective application of data analytic tools such as predictive, sentiment and learning analysis enables higher institutions to identify and adopt learning pathways, improve design of curriculum, identify at-risk students and strengthen governance. In developed and some developing countries such as Nigeria, data mining has been implemented in national examination data analysis, university management system and mobile learning platform etc. However, challenges including data privacy concerns, staff training gaps, lack of infrastructures and equal access to technology remain. This paper delves into the effects of implementing data mining in educational transformation and
advancement toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals, featuring both opportunities and challenges and taking a look at case studies from Nigeria to explain its impact
